In his unique collage-style, Ulu Braun creates a space betwixt and between reality and the digital world, where people of the past or present, either mythological or real characters, and their artefacts are juxtaposed on dramatic naturescapes. The derelict building of a timeless inn lies at the confluence of this political and social landscape across ages, somewhere in Europe. “This video collage combines pop culture and western movie myths with biblical narratives, biker culture and the waste products of civilisation with cultural set pieces to subtly create an intriguing and mesmerising narrative critique of civilization that resonates for a long time.” (Jury of the German Competition – International Short Film Festival Oberhausen 2017)
Director:

Ulu Braun has become a BIEFF regular and every time we are thrilled to welcome his work. Born in 1976 in Germany, he works and lives in Berlin. He studied painting and film at universities in Vienna, Helsinki and Potsdam. He has been using the medium of video to explore the field between the visual arts and auteur cinema since 1997. He is one of the key figures who have transferred painting into video art and have played a significant role in defining and further developing the genre of video collage. His video and film works are often compared to works by Andrei Tarkowski, Michel Gondry and Hieronymus Bosch and are regularly exhibited in art institutions and shown at international film festivals and won a good number of awards. His filmography includes: Architektura (2015, BIEFF 2016),  Birds (2014, BIEFF 2014), Forst (2013, BIEFF 2013), Vertikale (2013), Tower of Invincibility (2012), Maria Theresia and Her 16 Children (2011), The Park (2011), Atlantic Garden (2010) and Westcoast (2010, awarded at BIEFF in 2010).

Curatorial comment:
An unreal place, half dream, half reality, which shows itself to be a meeting point for people from all epochs, is taking shape in front of us in a long planned sequence. In a nearly surreal time journey, the pictures unveil themselves as if they were painted in strong, rich colours – disturbing, unsettling and fascinating. Where is the journey going? The short film award goes to a politically relevant work that is treading along new paths. (Jury of the Hamburg International Short Film Festival)
