What does it mean to be a citizen of a nation, especially when one's identity is rather ambiguous? A cross-generational and interracial group of performers embarks on a road trip from the north of France to Venice that soon becomes an escapist journey, both tangible and imaginary, towards an ideal “elsewhere”. Edited in PROVOUST’s feverish editing style, THEY PARLAIENT IDÉALE invites the audience down the rabbit-hole into the liquid and tentacular universe of an utopian collective subconscious, spiralling towards the sublime in the whispered rhythm of the tales recounted by the cast of musicians, dancers and magicians. (Oana Ghera, BIEFF 2020)
Director:
LAURE PROUVOST (b. 1978 Lille, France) received the prestigious Turner Prize in 2013 and has exhibited internationally at renowned institutions such as Tate Britain, Whitechapel Gallery in London, Portikus in Frankfurt Neuer Berliner Kunstverein and New Museum in New York. Playing with language as a tool for the imagination, Prouvost is interested in confounding linear narratives and expected associations among words, images and meaning. She combines existing and imagined personal memories with artistic and literary references to create complex film installations that muddy the distinction between fiction and reality. In 2019, her project DEEP SEE BLUE SURROUNDING YOU was presented at the French Pavilion during the Venice Biennale 2019.

PROVOUST’s personal journey has evolved through her works, from setting herself at the center of attempts to communicate with the exterior, to being immersed in the world. THEY PARLAIENT IDÉALE, the central component of the artist’s DEEP SEE BLUE SURROUNDING YOU project for the French pavilion at the Venice 2019 Biennale, is particularly compelling in its complexity, setting out to answer a series of current societal questions. With her unique use of puns and playful political commentary, in this film PROUVOUST explores themes such as identity and generations, disconnection and incomprehension, as well as utopias and surrealism.
