The most recent book by BIEFF honorary director Peter Greenaway is published in Romania by IBU Publishing. The film with the same name was screened at BIEFF, right after its world premiere at the Rome International Film Festival. The book is part of a series by the British filmmaker dedicated to the great personalities of art.
The Dutch engraver from the late 16th century intends to print a deluxe-edition Bible illustrating scenes from stories about sexual taboos: voyeurism, incest, adultery, pedophilia, prostitution and necrophilia. To persuade potential funders, he is willing to bring, from the Hague, the "Pelican" company, in order to dramatize six biblical episode: the priordial mating of Adam and Eve, the story of Lot and his daughters, the adultery of David and Bathsheba, the seduction of the minor Joseph by Potiphar's wife, the demonization of Dalilah and the humiliation of Samson, the necrophilic scene between Salome and John the Baptist.
Emblematic name in contemporary avant-garde cinema, Peter Greenaway is one of the most ambitious and controversial filmmakers of our time. Influenced by his studies in painting, linguistic structuralism theory, ethnography and philosophy, his films often cross uncharted territories, rejecting conventional narrative structures in favor of a fascinating visual universe, testing the limits and canons of cinematic language.
Regularly nominated at prestigious festivals such as Cannes, Venice and Berlin, Greenaway is the author of an impressive body of work: 13 feature films and 50 short films and documentaries, plus exhibitions, video installations, VJ performances, paintings, books, opera librettos. His first narrative feature film, The Draughtsman's Contract, completed in 1982, has received great critical acclaim and made Greenaway internationally revered as an original filmmaker. His reputation was enhanced by his following films such as The Cook, the Thief, His Wife, and her Lover, The Pillow Book and The Tulse Luper Suitcases.
