A mesmerizing Hitchcockian visual study in ornithology, BIRDS, by visual artist Ulu Braun. breaks down societal construction, hinting at a dormant danger: he observes Earth’s winged inhabitants from up close, looking at their ominous and omniscient presence that watches over us in quiet surveillance. Associative editing brings out the sinuous elegance of the creatures, placing them against the glamour and refuse of cities shaped by human civilization. A cohabitation of prehistoric lineage estranged by an abstract soundtrack, this unlikely pairing of fowl and man becomes a premonitory reminder of the fallacy of modern civilization’s progress. (Andrei Tănăsescu, BIEFF)

Ulu Braun

ULU BRAUN (b. 1976, Germany) first studied painting and experimental film in Vienna, media art in Helsinki and then animation at the Babelsberg-Potsdam Film University. He was granted the DAAD-Scholarship in 2007 and the Kunstfonds working grant in 2011. He is member of the artist collectives YKON and BitteBitteJaJa. He is known for his painterly approach and his exploration of the limit between real and virtual space, making the film medium a window onto a simulated world. His work has been projected in prestigious film festivals (Cannes, Berlin, Clermont-Ferrand, Oberhausen etc.) and various exhibitions (Kunsthalle Vienna, Museum der Moderne Salzburg, Bonn Art Museum etc.) Since 2002 he has been working with video-collage, making films that stretch the boundaries between contemporary art and narrative film.

Director's statement:
The film discovers and empathizes with its protagonists, the BIRDS, as prehistorical creatures. The footage was gathered during journeys to cities and suburban habitats during the last years. How do birds orientate themselves in spaces that we consider as ours? The rhythms through which they move their heads, turn their eyes and shake their feathers are intense and lead to a different understanding of time scale and possession of space. (Ulu Braun)

Curator's statement:
Down there - a crowded city, pale and distant. Up there - an eagle spreading its wings, both threatening and fascinating. Braun does more than merely study the meeting point between the savage and urban habitat. He looks at the subjects he’s filming as if they themselves were pieces of art, as if every small part of them is impressive if you focus on it from the right angle and then you just wait, observe, admire. As a viewer of the film, you stay with the birds, almost confront them closely while human presence is just something you’re vaguely aware of, from the distance. You follow the predator as if you are the one about to attack, while having the constant feeling that at any moment you can turn into being the prey. (Bianca Bănică, BIEFF)
